The Code's secondary objective is to provide guidelines for employers, employees and trade unions on how to manage HIV/AIDS within the workplace. Since the HIV/AIDS epidemic impacts upon the workplace and individuals at a number of different levels, it requires a holistic response which takes all of these factors into account.

The code provides invaluable practical guidance to policy-makers, employers’ and workers’ organizations and other social partners for formulating and implementing appropriate workplace policy, prevention and care programmes, and for establishing strategies to address workers in the informal sector.

It is the product of collaboration between the ILO and its tripartite constituents. use of public health expertise and authority today. Public health is a multidisciplinary profession including numerous specialized bodies of knowledge and practical experience useful in service to society.
